Legal Comment

The Khanka Police Department continues to detain activist Mahmoud Hussein, “the T-shirt detainee,” since 24 April 2024, despite him paying the L.E. 10,000 bail. This is in implementation of the decision by Cairo Criminal Court to release him pending retrial in the case in which he was convicted in absentia, in violation of all provisions of the constitution and the law. This detention is an intentional violation of the law, raising the question: Is it possible for citizens to respect the law in the absence of respect for it by those enforcing it?
