Legal Comment

Following an anonymous call to demonstrate on Friday, 12 July, The Dignity Day, arrests occurred to numerous citizens, of whom we documented 33 in Case No. 3434 of 2024. This took place while there are reports that the number exceeded 70 detainees. The coming days may bring confirmation of their number, the accused, and whether they were random or following proper investigations with evidence of a legally punishable crime.

The decisions of Terrorism Chambers to continue detaining hundreds of defendants for 45 days in connection with various cases, just give a clear and explicit indication of the unwillingness to radically end the pretrial detention file. Especially without considering the renewal session for their detention due to them exceeding the maximum limit for pretrial detention in the Code of Criminal Procedure, which is set at 24 months in criminal cases. A clear example is the case of journalist Medhat Ramadan, who is detained in pretrial detention pending Case No. 680 of 2020 since his arrest in May 2020.
