Legal Comment
Almost 48 hours after hacking one of the billboards screens of an analysis laboratory on Faisal Street and screening phrases and pictures insulting the President of the Republic, the Egyptian Ministry of Interior announced that the their success arresting a young man working as a “screen technician”. The ministry stated the technician mentioned in his confession to receiving instructions from the electronic committees of the Muslim Brotherhood abroad, without announcing any other details about the name of the young man, the place of his arrest, the place of his detention, or his presentation to any investigative body.
This raises doubt about the truth of that man’s involvement in that matter, wondering if he is just a scapegoat to calm the President of the Republic. Moreover, many questions spark about the fate of that young man and the extent of his treatment and torture inside his unannounced detention facility in light of the blackout about his whereabouts.
Although no demonstration took place in Egypt on 12 July, the State Security Prosecution continued to investigate 92 citizens during this week in Case No. 3434 of 2024, Supreme State Security, known within the Prosecution as the “Revolution of Dignity” case. Which brings the total number of those investigated in connection with this case so far to 125 citizens, including at least one child, according to a statement by the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights.
Egyptian security forces, supported by members of the National Security Sector, arrested journalist Khaled Mamdouh at dawn on 16 July, after storming his home in the Mokattam, Cairo, confiscating his personal laptop, and interrogating his family members until he arrived. They then took him in a microbus to an unknown location until now. This raises doubts about the journalist’s life and his possible exposure especially in light of the blackout regarding his detention facility.
