Actions of the Investigative Judges:

During the Whole Week

State Security Prosecution and investigating judges, in continuation of an approach that began in the past few months, referred a number of frozen cases, including cases 2380 of 2021, and 2976 of 2021, Supreme State Security, to the Cairo Court of Appeal to designate a terrorism chamber to consider them..

Legal Comment

Lawyer Hoda Abdel Moneim, known for her defense of human rights cases, has spent six years between a five-year prison sentence by Cairo Criminal Court in the case known in the media as the Egyptian Coordination for Rights and Freedoms case, as well as thirteen months in pretrial detention pending case No. 730 of 2020 without a trial after rotation.

However, the Supreme State Security Prosecution was not satisfied with that period and her continued detention pending the case to which she was rotated. It summoned her on 17 November to face a new investigation into the case.

A development that raises questions about targeting human rights figures, which is disregarding the law, as well as a clear message to intimidate anyone who works in human rights or expresses an opposing opinion.

The State Security Prosecution referral of many old frozen cases raises doubts about the extent of respect for the law and the freedoms and rights of citizens. The referral often takes place after years of detention for some detainees in pretrial detention, instead of releasing them.

We imagine that the reason is an attempt to escape the severe criticism of the spread of the phenomenon of prolonged pretrial detention without evidence,

by referring them to trial instead of releasing them, especially in the absence of evidence for most of these cases.
