Legal Comment

The head of Cairo Criminal Court, Terrorism Chamber-I, held in Badr Prison

directed the phrase “Don’t attack anyone” to activist Sherif El-Rouby, then the remote renewal screen was turned off while El-Rouby was speaking.

This is a clear violation of his right to express his health condition and defend himself, especially since El-Rouby’s statement during his speech was only limited to recounting the health struggles he had endured, including his transfer to the prison hospital, having an MRI scan, while not being informed of the results, and only being given painkillers, despite his suffering from inflammation of the seventh nerve.

All of this raise concerns about the effectiveness of remote renewal sessions

and their transformation into a means of isolating defendants from their court judges.

The release of the 65 pretrial detainees could be a step toward achieving justice, that we hope will include others, and that the National Security Agency will stop its security persecution of citizens as well as ordering their detention based on false investigations, which only exacerbates the cycle of pretrial detention.
