Legal Comment

Supreme State Security Prosecution has its fourth case against Ahmed Douma since his release in August 2023, in continuation of the intimidation and persecution of political activists and former prisoners of conscience who refuse to be subjugated and acquiesce to the authorities, in clear violation of constitutional guarantees, including freedom of expression and a fair trial.

This practice contributes to a climate of fear and creates hatred against not only the executive authority, but rather the judiciary as well, which serves as a cover for government repression.

The recent five-year prison sentence against Ahmed Aboul Fotouh, son of Dr. Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh, head of the Strong Egypt Party and former presidential candidate, is nothing but a new example of the use of anti-terrorism laws against critics and the judiciary for political persecution.
