Legal Comment

Supreme State Security Prosecution has summoned Human rights lawyer Mahienour El-Masry, over Facebook posts, and then decided to acquit her on L.E. 50,000 bail.

This is the third of such summons this month, following those of journalist Lina Atta Allah, editor-in-chief of Mada Masr, and activist Ahmed Douma.

This reflects a desire to intimidate and silence opinion-makers, contradicting the claims of the President of openness and respect for freedom of expression.

Translator Marwa Arafa suffered a pulmonary embolism in her cell in tenth of Ramadan-IV Prison. The prison administration subsequently asked her mother to bring her some medical supplies, in a flagrant illustration of the precarious health conditions of prisoners in Egypt.

However, instead of releasing her since she had exceeded the legal maximum period for pretrial detention, she was returned to her prison, or, more accurately, as the opposition in Egypt now call it, to her place of captivity..
