V.             Prison News:

Monday, 3 November

  • The wife of political prisoner and Vice President of the Strong Egypt Party, Mohamed El-Qassas, posted on her Facebook page that she had submitted a request to the Prisons Authority to allow her husband to leave prison and visit his ailing mother, whose health had deteriorated and whom he had not seen since his arrest in 2018.

Wednesday 6 November

  1. She announced his mother’s death without him being able to visit her.

Legal Comment

The Ministry of Interior, represented by the Prisons Authority, ignored the request submitted by the wife of prisoner of conscience Mohamed El-Qassas to allow him to visit his ailing mother. This constitutes a blatant violation of a fundamental human right enshrined in the laws and regulations governing prisons, which obligate authorities to enable inmates to maintain human contact with their families in such exceptional circumstances.

The death of El-Qassas’s mother a few days after submitting the request, without him being able to see her since his arrest in 2018, is a continuation of a vindictive approach and cannot be considered a mere administrative oversight.

The restrictions of imprisonment have been transformed from a means of enforcing punishment into a tool of revenge that transcends both law and justice.

Pretrial detention renewal hearings are no longer a means of reviewing the legality of continued detention, but rather, they have become a mere formality,

emptying the law of its substance, and a blatant violation of the presumption of innocence, transforming pretrial detention into an actual punishment carried out without a verdict, in grave violation of the principle that freedom is the norm, and detention the exception.
