Legal Comment
Code of Criminal Procedure was issued, despite widespread objections, to increase the powers of the authorities in arrest and investigation, which leads to disruption of the course of justice, threatens individual rights, was well as weakens trust between citizens and judicial institutions.
The renewal of the detention of activist Sherif El-Rouby, despite exceeding the maximum limit for pretrial detention, reaffirms that pretrial detention is now being applied according to political considerations, thus violating right of the citizens as stipulated in the constitution and the law.
