VIII.     Statements and Information:

Monday, 17 November

  • Ministry of Interior, in a statement on its Facebook page, denied what activist Ahmed Douma had posted on his page: that armed individuals were following and filming him inside the Opera House. The Ministry asserted that the person in question was a member of the security detail affiliated with the Tourism Police.

Legal Comment

Activist Ahmed Douma posted that a person carrying a firearm was following him in several locations, including Cairo Opera House, which raises serious concerns for his life and personal safety.

The Ministry of Interior quickly denied the report without announcing an immediate investigation or taking any measures to uphold the rule of law, but rather merely issuing a media response without taking any practical investigative action could put the life of the activist at real risk, especially since other activists and human rights defenders have been subjected to physical assaults in the past, such as Judge Hisham Geneina and human rights lawyer Gamal Eid, without any punishment, accountability, or fair investigation by the Public Prosecution.
