Civil society in Egypt .. March 2023

Section one: Egyptian political parties

  • Nation’s Future Party

Although not officially declared as the party closest to and expressive of the regime in Egypt, both its charitable and social activities that express the inclinations of the presidency, as well as its playing the role of the majority supporting all positions of power, have clearly proved this.

  1. The party’s activity was limited to – with “minor exceptions – providing charitable services such as medical convoys and the sale of meat and Ramadan goods at reduced prices in many cities and governorates such as Qena, the Red Sea, Giza, Marsa Matrouh, Sohag, Kafr El-Sheikh, Assuit, Munufia, Ismailia, and others.
  2. The party also held, on March 4th, an employment forum to provide job opportunities in the city of Zagazig, Sharqia, with the participation of directors of numerous companies.
  3. On March 10th, the party held an extensive symposium entitled The Future of Industry in the Shadow of the New Republic” in the presence of Eng. Ahmed Samir, Minister of Industry and Trade, a number of party leaders, the head of the Industrial Development Authority, and the president of the Arab Bank.
  4. On March 20th, the party’s general secretariat hosted the Minister of Environment in a symposium titled “Cop 27 Achievements”.
  5. On March 30th, the party organized visits for young people to learn about the giant national projects that have been accomplished in the city of New Mansoura, in implementation of the directives of the President of the Republic, according to what the party published.

  • Al-Dostour party

The party’s activities have varied, despite its limitations, from charitable and economic activities to supporting the families of Nubian prisoners in Saudi Arabia.

  1. It was the only party joining the people of Toulon and Qalaat al-Kebsh, in launching the charitable clinics of the Shariah Committee in Sayeda Zeinab.
  2. On March 18th, the party participated in the economic conference called for by The Civil Democratic Movement at the headquarters of the Conservative Party, titled a strategic vision towards real development of the Egyptian economy.
  3. The party congratulated the independent journalist, Khaled Al-Balshi, upon his election as president of the Journalists Syndicate.
  4. On March 25th, the party welcomed the families of the Nubian prisoners in the KSA, with the head of the Egyptian Nubian community, to announce its support for them.

  • The Egyptian Social Democratic Party

The most active Egyptian party, especially in regards to the parliamentary activities, as the party submitted nine requests for briefing, discussion and parliamentary questions, in addition to a request to withdraw confidence from the government.

  1. The party members in the parliament have submitted briefing requests in regards to; the Ismailia International Short Film Festival’s management stealing the festival logo, the incidents of corruption in the Egyptian equestrian team, the Qalub train accident, the lack of guiding traffic signs on roads and corridors throughout the Republic, the insane rise in the prices of construction materials, the lack of a number of immunosuppressive drugs, the confidentiality breach of the data of Egyptians abroad on social media platforms, as well as the next steps to review Egypt before the Commission on Human Rights in Geneva.
  2. Discussion requests about the government’s policy to address the shortage of medical supplies in hospitals, the government’s policy to deal with high prices, as well as the steps taken by the government to deal with cases of powerful earthquakes.
  3. The party has issued statements condemning the Israeli violations in the city of Nablus, a statement supporting decisions to increase wages and pensions, and a statement condemning the continued imprisonment of party member Nabil George.
  4. The party has organized in Giza and Badrashin a symposium on domestic violence and its impact on children, a workshop to discuss structural reforms in the light of possible scenarios for the global economy, a seminar on children’s rights, and a Wednesday meeting to discuss the outcome of the Russian-Ukrainian war in its second year.
  5. The party has organized a medical convoy in Assuit, and a field awareness campaign, build your son, in the village of Abu Sir in Badrashin.
  6. On March 13th, the party launched its new headquarters in the center and city of Qalub.
  7. On March 21st, Representative Maha Abdel Nasser called on Parliament to withdraw confidence from the government in its comment on the bill to open an additional appropriation for the general budget.

  • Socialist Popular Alliance Party

The activity of the Socialist Popular Alliance Party during March, was limited to opening a headquarters for the party in Alexandria, issuing a statement refusing to displace the residents of Ezbet Abu Rajab and divert fertile agricultural lands in favor of roads and real estate investment, in addition to a statement of congratulations on the election of Khaled Al-Balshi as president of the journalists syndicate, and participation in the economic conference organized by the civil movement at the headquarters of the Conservative Party.

  • Egyptian Communist Party (not legally registered)

  1. The party’s activity during March was limited to issuing some statements about the International Women’s Day, supporting the visit paid by Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry to both Syria and Turkey to express the support of the Egyptian people for the Syrian and Turkish people, and the return of Saudi-Iranian relations.
  2. The party has organized a symposium entitled The Egyptian Left’s Position on the Economic Crisis.
  3. The party has also participated in the economic conference organized by the civil movement parties.

  • The Arab Democratic Nasserist Party

  1. Six activities inside the party headquarters held by the Nasserist party, including seminars on present crises and future prospects in Libya, a symposium on the Egyptian cultural project, opportunities and challenges, and a symposium on developments in IMF loans.
  2. The rest of the activities were screening movies such as Sons of Silence, A Bird on the Road, and an artistic evening.

  • Egyptian Socialist Party

The party had only two activities during March; a Seminar on the science of futurism, and a congratulatory statement for Khaled El Balshi winning the position of President of the Journalists Syndicate.

  • Justice party

  1. The party had 18 events and activities during March, 11 of which revolved around the issuance of statements and position papers on the obituary of the victims of the Al-Mutlaa Road accident in Kuwait, supporting the president’s decisions to increase pensions and wages, the memory of the 1919 revolution, in support of withdrawing from the Grain Agreement, the repercussions of the American banking crisis, as well as congratulatory statements to the president of the actors syndicate for his reelection, and to the newly elected president of the journalists syndicate.
  2. The party has organized an event to launch a “Be Careful” initiative to combat the electronic extortion of women.
  3. The party has also participated in a discussion session organized by the Reform and Renaissance Party entitled “Political Development and its Impact on the Economic Situation and Community Cohesion.”
  4. Participation in the economic conference held by the civil movement at the headquarters of the Conservative Party.

 

Section Two: Professional and labor unions in Egypt

 

  • Professional unions


  • Journalists Syndicate

  • On March 3rd, 2023, the committee supervising the elections of the Syndicate of Journalists decided to postpone the General Assembly of Journalists for two weeks, according to the text of the law, due to the lack of a legal quorum of 50% + 1 of the members who paid the registration fees, to be held on March 17th, 2023, in accordance with Article 35 of Law No. 76 of 1970 establishing the Journalists Syndicate, where the number of members of the General Assembly actually registered according to the latest update is 9848 members, including 9248 who have paid registration fees, and therefore the convening of the General Assembly requires 4625 members.

 

  • On March 17th, the agenda of the General Assembly was:
  1. Opening of the session and recitation of apologies.
  2. Approval of the minutes of the previous General Assembly.
  3. Viewing the Association Council report.
  4. Approval of the budget and final account.
  5. Discussing issues proposed by journalists and presented by the Syndicate Council, under the condition that the General Assembly agreed to discuss them, and not other topics.
  6. Elections for the president’s seat and mid-term renewal of the board’s membership.
  7. Announcing the decisions and recommendations of the General Assembly.
  8. Operational updates.
  9. The committee supervising the elections for the president of the Journalists Syndicate announcing the victory of journalist writer Khaled Al-Balshi as president.

 

  • On March 22nd, the Journalists Syndicate issued a statement condemning the occupation forces tracking Palestinian media institutions and preventing Palestine Radio from working and investigating its employees, considering that a blatant violation of the freedom of press and media,and a clear intention to prevent the Palestinian people from presenting their legitimate cause.
  • The Prime Minister approved the offer of the Minister of Finance to increase the training and technology allowance for members of the Journalists Syndicate by 20% at an annual cost of 60 million pounds, and to support the union pension fund with ten million pounds and the support for “unemployment benefit” allowances for “unemployed” journalists.

On March 31st, the new president was notified of the disbursement of the approved amounts, starting from April 2023.

 

  • On March 26th, the Council of the Journalists Syndicate met in its first meeting, and the office body and council committees were formed as follows:

  3. Syndicate representative and head of the registration committee: Hisham Younis

  6. Deputy of the Syndicate, Chairman of the Cultural and Artistic Committee, and Chairman of the People and Associations Committee: Mahmoud Kamel
  7. Deputy of the Syndicate and Chairman of the Services and Technology Committee: Muhammad Yahya Youssef
  8. Head of the Housing Committee: Abdul Raouf Khalifa
  9. Head of the Women and Activism Committees: Doaa Al-Naggar
  10. Head of the Health and Social Care Committee: Muhammad Al-garhi
  11. Assistant Secretary General: Doaa Al-Naggar – Muhammad Al-garhi

 

  • The Council decided to form a committee to review the unemployment records and set the necessary controls for disbursing them.

 

  • On March 30th, the Freedoms Committee of the Syndicate condemned the International Football Association (FIFA) withdrawal of the organization of the Youth World Cup from Indonesia, after the Football Association there had refused to host the Israeli national team. The two committees confirmed that the withdrawal of the International Federation of Youth World Cup organization from Indonesia is a continuation of the policy of double standards pursued by the International Federation of Football Associations.

  • The Bar Association:

  • On March 4th , the Administrative Court considered 44 appeals from lawyers against the Minister of Finance, demanding to exempt lawyers from registering in the electronic billing system.

The court decided to reserve the case for judgment on March 18th, where the Administrative Court decided to stop all appeals filed by lawyers regarding the cancellation and suspension of the implementation of the decision of the Minister of Finance to register in the electronic invoice system.

This is a suspension until the case is decided before the Constitutional Court.

 

  • The Head of the Bar Association issued a decision on March 11th to the Disciplinary Department to refer the lawyers involved in the two incidents of quarrels in the partial courts of Maadi and Agga, for investigation for violating the ethics and morals of the legal profession.

 

  • On March 30th, the head of the Bar Association issued a decision to extend participation in the treatment project for lawyers and their families to a date of April 13th, 2023, in order to facilitate the lawyers in the health care project.

  • Doctors Syndicate

  • At the beginning of March, the Social Committee of the Syndicate announced social support for doctors during the months of January and February to provide support for doctors and their families in crises, including providing financial support for treatment and study for the children of doctors and in cases of catastrophic death, especially for young doctors, stating that the committee provided financial support to the families of 4 Covid-19 deaths among doctors in February.

 

  • The Doctors Syndicate decided to set a date on March 17th for an emergency general assembly. This is to discuss the dealings of the Tax Authority and doctors with unfair methods and mechanisms, and the requirements of the local administration in the governorates to license medical facilities. This is in light of the challenges doctors face in the absence of any positive results from the executive authorities. However, the lack of a quorum for the general assembly called for by the Syndicate Council prevented a decision in these matters.

 

  • On March 4th, the Administrative Court decided to reserve case No. 16759 of the judicial year 77 filed by the Doctors Syndicate against the Minister of Finance and the head of the Egyptian Tax Authority in their capacity, to challenge the obligation of physicians to register in the electronic billing system, for Saturday, March 18th, to pronounce the verdict. In the March 18th session, the Administrative Court decided to suspend the appeal pending a decision on the appeal in the Supreme Constitutional Court.

 

  • On March 7th, 6,658 doctors and members of the medical team including dentists, nurses, and technicians addressed the President of the Republic to implement his powers to intervene to direct the issuance of a fair law of medical liability.

 

  • On March 27th, the Doctors Syndicate addresses the Minister of Health, to issue a periodic book to be circulated to the employees of the Ministries of Health and Higher Education, and calculating the financial benefits of doctors working in the Ministry of Health and universities who are not addressed by the Civil Service Law, on the basis of the salary on the first of July 2016 after including the bonus stipulated in Law 16 of 2017. The Doctors Syndicate also demanded, in its two letters, that the financial differences due to doctors be paid for the past years.

 

  • At the end of March, the Doctors Syndicate submitted a complaint to the Public Prosecutor against the warden of the Gamassa police station, and the prison staff, after the death of Dr. Ragai Wafai during his pre-trial detention pending record No. 209 of 2023 Administrative Gamassa, where he had faced intransigence and ill-treatment by the police officers and secretaries of the Gamassa police station, adding  he had been subjected to psychological and physical torture, in a violation of all international covenants and treaties to which Egypt is committed, which protect human rights and combat torture in all its forms.

  • Engineers Syndicate

  • On March 4th, the Engineers Syndicate communicated with the security services to release the engineer Abu Zaid Ammar in Kafr El-Sheikh, after his unjust arrest and detention.
  • On March 6th, the General Assembly held in the Osiris Garden in the conference hall in Nasr City, in the presence of 3431 engineers, headed by the Engineers Syndicate, issued several decisions, including:
  1. Approving the refusal of the elected members of the Syndicate Council to assume positions in the membership of the boards of directors of the companies in which the Syndicate is a shareholder, since this is a violation of the principle of separation of ownership from management, in order to avoid conflicts of interest, and for  members of the General Assembly with experience and competence assume such positions.
  2. Increasing the engineers’ pension by L.E. 150.
  3. Approving by the majority to change the General Secretariat of the Syndicate (Secretary General  – Assistant Secretary), and assigning the Council of the Syndicate to choose a new secretariat.

 

  • On March 7th, the Engineers Syndicate issued a decision to temporarily suspend the Syndicate Facebook page to insure using it for only purposes of the interest of the Syndicate. The decision also prohibited publishing any publications at the Syndicate’s expense until further instructions.

 

  • On March 15th, and after the issuance of decisions in the meeting of the Syndicate Council, the Engineers Syndicate issued a decision stipulating: “Any authorization issued in the competence of the President of the Engineers Syndicate shall be revoked, and any signatures regarding contracts with third parties (individuals – companies – external parties … etc.) will not be considered, without the offer and the personal approval of the Present of the Syndicate, who is the legal representative. That was after the crises that arose within the Syndicate Council against the decisions of the Syndicate and filing a lawsuit in the State Council.”

 

  • On March18th, the President of the Engineers Syndicate held a meeting of the Syndicate Council to discuss changing the General Secretariat (Secretary General – Assistant Secretary).

 

  • During the presence of some engineers, the Secretary-General, Eng. Yusra El-Deeb, notified Azbakeya police station warden of the presence of unknown persons inside the Syndicate headquarters and their gathering, and asked him to intervene with a security force.

 

  • On March 20th, after presenting the report by the Secretary-General against three engineers while they were at the headquarters of the General Syndicate, the Azbakeya Prosecution summoned the engineers for interrogation. The Public Prosecution ordered the release of the three engineers (Muhammad Saad Asran – Sameh Sayed Saad – Muhammad Khaled) from the Public Prosecution’s prison.

  • Acting Professions Syndicate

The committee supervising the elections announced that the artist Ashraf Zaki won the seat of the President of the Acting Professions Syndicate on March 3rd.

  • Customs Inspectors Syndicate

On March 2nd, the head of the Customs Authority decided to approve the cancellation of the decision to suspend the work of authority from the stakeholders for extractors for a period of 6 months. That was in regards of obligating the work of customs extractors through the license to practice the activity and not through the authority of the owner of the goods, taking into account the social dimension.

  • Labour Unions

 

  • At the beginning of March, the Board of Directors of the General Syndicate of Land Transport Workers has issued a decision in its meeting chaired by Ashraf El Dokar, the Assistant Treasurer of the General Federation of Egyptian Trade Unions. The decision was Suspending Ibrahim Abdel Fattah Qishta, a member of the Council of the General Syndicate of Land Transport Workers, from his union activity, and referring him to the General Assembly of the General Union in its capacity as the supreme authority to hold him accountable, withdraw confidence from him, and permanently dismiss him. That was because he had committed violations of the code of ethics for trade union work, and allegedly publishing lies on social media, causing confusion, sedition and unrest among the people of the same country.
  • The State Security Prosecution has decided to renew the detention of Muhammad Hashem, a worker at the Public Transport Authority, who was detained pending case No. 184 of 2013 State Security. The Prosecution charged him with joining and financing a terrorist group and spreading false news.
  • On March 21st, the State Security Prosecution decided to renew the detention of Ambulance worker Sameh Zachariah for 15 days in Case No. 2412 of 2022 State Security. The Public Prosecution charged Sameh with publishing false news and belonging to a banned group.
  • On March 29th, 8,000 workers of the Misr Spinning & Weaving Almahalla AlQubra refrained from disbursing the Ramadan grant, in protest against the calculation of the grant on the basis of the wage of 2019. They demanded that it be based on 2022, as the company’s management had decided that the Ramadan grant for 2023, which is estimated at a month and a half of the wage included, would be disbursed. Basic wage for the year 2014 and workers demanded an increase in wages of one thousand pounds, which was decided by the President of the Republic.
  • On the same day, March 29th, the House of Trade Union and Workers Services moved the annual collective Ramadan Iftar gathering, to which labor leaders and representatives of independent trade union organizations were invited, to the headquarters of the House after the cancellation of the Shahr Zad Hotel in Agouza based on security instructions without justification or reason.

Section 3: Human Rights Organizations and Defenders

  • Human Rights Organizations most important activities and publications

  • Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) 

  • On March 5th, 2023, ATFE submitted a request to the Public Prosecutor, requesting investigating again in the case of Hudhoud’s death inside the Mental Health Hospital in Abbasia. ATFE also demanded that the civil lawsuit filed by Hudhoud’s brother to be against the administration of the Mental Health Hospital in Abbasia.
  • On March 13th, ATFE sent a letter to the Public Prosecutor regarding the move to release the poet Galal Al-Beheiri after he had entered an open hunger strike and taken medication for heart and depression due to his continued arbitrary detention.
  • On the same date, ATFE filed an appeal to the Administrative Court against the President of Helwan University and the Dean of the Faculty of Art Education at the university after the negative decision to refrain from appointing Ms. Sarah Ahmed Al-Taher as a teaching assistant at the university. She had obtained B+ grade with honors however had not got a security approval.
  • On March 19th, 2023, ATFE issued a research paper entitled “Forbidden in the Book Fair” about the activities of the 54th edition of the fair, which included the testimonies of 6 writers and owners of publishing houses, most of whom participated in the fair.

  • Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR)

  • On March 8th, 2023, within the framework of International Women’s Day, EIPR issued a report monitoring Egypt’s success in reducing maternal mortality. The report dealt with the accumulated efforts that led to a decrease in maternal mortality rates in Egypt during the twenty-year period between 2000 and 2020.
  • On March 15th, 2023, Hossam Bahgat, Director of EIPR, delivered a joint statement submitted on behalf of 17 Egyptian, African and international human rights organizations, to the Human Rights Council of the United Nations at its session in Geneva.

The statement addressed the worsening human rights crisis in Egypt, in the item dedicated to the situation of human rights defenders. Bahgat reviewed the steadfastness of the Egyptian human rights movement over the past four decades in the face of harassment, restrictions, and criminalization that amounted to imprisoning Egyptian human rights activists.

  • On March 15th, EIPR published on its Facebook page an infographic about the death sentences issued during the month of February 2023, which witnessed the issuance of death sentences against 32 citizens in 26 cases.
  • On March 21st, the initiative announced the participation of the official responsible for the freedom of religion and belief file in a meeting organized by the Bread and Freedom Party (under construction) entitled “Egyptian Christian Women’s Issues;   Overlapping Discrimination and Violence” and tackled the complex discrimination suffered by Christian women, especially in issues such as inheritance and personal status.
  • On March 27th, the initiative announced a meeting between Hossam Bahgat, and the deputy foreign minister of the Netherlands, Paul Hoyts, and his accompanying delegation, from March 19 – 25.

On the sidelines of Cairo Heights’ visit to hold the Egyptian-Dutch political consultations, which dealt with a number of issues, including human rights and media freedom.

  • At the end of March, the initiative issued a research paper entitled “Social protection measures are limited in the face of storms of pound depreciation.”

The paper exposed the impact of the waves of high prices that Egyptians are going through, especially on the lives and livelihoods of the poor and their ability to secure their basic needs.

  • Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms (ECRF)

  • On March 22nd, 2023, ECRF launched a campaign entitled “Tales of Oppression” on violence against Christian women, shedding light on incidents of violence against Christian women, based on monitoring 3 incidents of violence and intransigence with Christian women.
  • On March 13th, 2023, ECRF issued, as part of the celebrations of Women’s Month, in cooperation with the “Hunna” campaign, a guide to women’s rights, to raise awareness of women’s legal rights.
  • On March 14th, 2023, ECRF published on its official website a paper entitled Domestic Violence against Women. The paper dealT with the definition of violence against women according to the legal framework to protect women from violence.

  • The National Council for Human Rights (NCHR)

  • On March 9th, 2023, the official website of NCHR published that its President, Moushira Khattab, had organized an open meeting with Ain Shams University students in implementation of the cooperation protocol signed between Ain Shams University and the Council in order to work on implementing the national strategy for human rights.
  • On March 16th, NCHR published news that it had organized a training course entitled “Supporting Journalists’ Capabilities in Enhancing the Human Rights-Based Approach to Journalism Coverage.”
  • On March 19th, the official website of NCHR published a workshop entitled The National Strategy for Human Rights on Concepts, Challenges of Implementation, at the Council’s headquarters in the Fifth Settlement.

  • Center For Egyptian Women’s Legal Assistance (CEWLA)

  • On March 16th, 2023, the Access to Justice Program at CEWLA held a dialogue table in Sohag Governorate about the importance of a just Egyptian family law, within the framework of a draft law that is more equitable for all Egyptians, coinciding with the celebration of Egyptian Women’s Day.
  • On March 21st, 2023, CEWLA held a press conference “A Safe Environment for Women”, which it is implementing in cooperation with the German “Friedrich Ebert” organization. The conference tackled many issues. The issues included a working paper on “Mechanisms for reporting cases of violence against women and how to obtain support”, the role of the executive authorities in protecting victims and the importance of having safe spaces to receive complaints and reports, the psychological problems resulting from the loss of protection and safety, and the problems of reporting cases of violence against women.

  • Masaar

  • On March 27th, 2023, Masaar issued a research paper entitled “From Hypothetical Threats to Realistic Consequences”. The research paper dealt with the definition of the crime of cyber extortion, the difference between cyber and regular extortion, as well as the relationship of cyber extortion and the right to personal freedom and how to reduce cyber extortion.

  • Egyptian Front for Human Rights (EFHR)

  • On March 16th, 2023, EFHR issued a study entitled “Strategic Recommendations for Legislation Against Discrimination and Violence against Egyptian Women.” The study presented proposals to combat violence and discrimination against women in national legislation and laws. Those laws include the Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, personal status laws, all laws related to personal freedoms and the intersecting spaces between the rights of women and minorities, as well as the prison regulation law

  • Collective Human Rights Activities

  • On March 16th, a number of human rights organizations issued a joint statement, calling on the Egyptian authorities to stop persecuting male and female journalists to prevent them from freely performing their journalistic work. That came after the Public Prosecution’s decision to refer three Mada Masr female journalists to criminal trial, on the grounds of publishing news about the involvement of members of the Nation’s Future Party in “serious financial irregularities” that may lead to their removal from their posts.
  • On March 20th, 2023, a number of Egyptian and international human rights organizations issued a joint statement, appealing to the Egyptian authorities to enable the International Committee of the Red Cross and independent human rights organizations to inspect the Badr prison complex, amidst the circulating reports that those held there have been subjected to grave human rights violations.
  • Violations against human rights defenders:


  • Travel ban:

  • On March 10th, 2023, the security authorities at Cairo Airport prevented the Quranic blogger Reda Abdel Rahman from traveling to Saudi Arabia to search for a job opportunity. The authorities also instructed him to go the next day to the National Security Office in Sharqia, which informed when he went there the next day, that he would not be able to travel until he either obtained a proof that the investigations had been preserved in the case he was accused of, or obtained an acquittal of the charges against him.

  • Detention renewal:

  • On March 13th, 2023, the Terrorism Chamber of the Cairo Criminal Court, sitting in the Correction and Rehabilitation Center of Badr City, renewed the detention of activist and translator Marwa Arafa for 45 days in Case No. 570 of 2020. Marwa faces charges of joining a terrorist group, the crime of finance and supply, and publishing false news and statements.
  • On March 28th, 2023, the Terrorism Department of the Cairo Criminal Court, held in the Badr City Correction and Rehabilitation Center, renewed the detention of human rights lawyer Ahmed Nazir Al-Helou.   • Trials:

  • On March 4th, 2023, the Agga Misdemeanor Court postponed the first session of the trial of activist Mohamed Adel in Case No. 2981 of 2023 copied from Case No. 5606 of 2018 Agga Misdemeanor on charges of publishing false news and statements. The postponement was to the April 1st, 2023 session for the defense to review.

  • Court rulings:

  • On March 5th, 2023, Circuit-1 terrorism in the Cairo Criminal Court held in Badr Prison, sentenced human rights lawyer and former member of the National Council for Human Rights, Hoda Abdel Moneim. The sentence was 5 years imprisonment, 5 years of probation, and including her on the lists of terrorist entities for a period of 5 years. That was in the case known in the media as the trial of activists of the Egyptian Coordination for Rights and Freedoms. The court also ruled to block the website of the Egyptian Coordination for Rights and Freedoms on the Internet

  • Gains:

  • On March 7th, 2023, Attorney Hoda Nasrallah, Director of the Legal Unit at the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, obtained a ruling to apply Christian law in inheritance, equating male and female equality in inheritance distribution and not applying Islamic law.
  • On March 17th, 2023, the committee supervising the midterm elections in the Syndicate of Journalists announced that journalist Khaled Al-Balshi winning the position of President of the Journalists Syndicate, succeeding the journalist and head of the State Information Service, Diaa Rashwan. That was after a competition with the journalist and editor-in-chief of Al-Akhbar newspaper, Khaled Miri.
  • On March 26th, 2023, the Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights obtained a ruling from the Administrative Judicial Court to annul the negative decision of the Egyptian government refraining from carrying out the necessary maintenance to protect the palace of Prince Said Halim, known as “Champillion” and making it available to the public for tourism and cultural purposes as an Egyptian antiquity, in Appeal No. 21272 For the 67th judicial year.
