Section one: Egyptian political parties

 

The month of June witnessed a weak activity for the Egyptian parties, and all parties mourned the civil rights advocate “George Isaac” who passed away, and the partisan activities, whether service or political, were as follows:.

Nation’s Future Party

The party did not have any political positions or activities during June, except for both the statement to deny its connection to the events of the Engineers Syndicate and the criminal assault on the General Assembly, and a symposium on June 6 on how to overcome environmental pollution.

The party’s activity was practically limited to service activities, such as selling goods at reduced prices or medical services in many governorates.

Al-Dostour party

The Party had no significant activities during June, except for the obituary of the civil rights advocate “George Isaac” and a brief statement by the party leader about the presidential elections, in which she said:

“If there were no *practical and real guarantees* for a peaceful transfer of power, these elections would be the second part of the 2018 review… Here in this room and outside it are multiple men and women that are suitable for the mission of the president, or members of a presidential team… but this will never come through the 2018 scenario, even if it is an honor to try or a noble participation.

The Egyptian Social Democratic Party

As usual, the Egyptian Democratic Party was one of the most active during the month of June.

  • On June 1, the party issued a statement condemning the incidents of the Engineers Syndicate
  • On June 2, Representative and member of the House of Representatives for the party Reham Abdel Nabi, requested the briefing of the Chancellor, Dr. Hanafi Gabali; Speaker of the House of Representatives, to direct it to:

Dr. Mostafa Madbouli; Prime Minister

Lieutenant General Kamel Al-Wazir; Minister of Transport

Major General Hisham Amna; the Minister of Local Development.

The request of briefing was in regards to the problem of road advertisements and the explicit threat they cause to the lives of citizens.

  • On June 4, Representative Samira El-Gazzar submits a request for a briefing on planting trees in roads and streets and creating a green belt around cities as wind and dust buffers.
  • On June 4, the party published a report on the International Day for Children Victims of Abuse, entitled “Since then, the number of child victims of abuse has doubled.”
  • On June 7, the Party made recommendations to amend the draft general plan for social and economic development
  • On June 8, Representative and member of the House of Representatives for the party Reham Abdel Nabi submitted a request for a briefing addressed to the Minister of Education, about the ministry plan to add scientific materials to students that are compatible with the requirements of the times and the development we are witnessing in the use of technology.
  • On June 12, Mona Abdel-Radi, a member of the party’s supreme body, announced the suspension of her attendance at the national dialogue sessions, in protest of what she described as “the failure to implement promises to release prisoners and the continued restrictions on freedom of the press.”

Socialist Popular Alliance Party

  • On June 1, the Party organized an online symposium on its official Facebook page on Monday, June 5, 2023, at eight o’clock in the evening, entitled “Removing cemeteries and destroying cultural heritage, why?!”.
  • On June 11, Party organizes a memorial service for the martyr Mohamed Salah.

Justice party 

  • On June 6, member of the House of Representatives for the party and deputy head of the Party Ahmed Al-Kenawi, announced his rejection of the draft economic and social development plan law for the fiscal year 2023/2024. He indicated that the development document did not include clear details of the data, nor did it make comparisons between what had and what had not been implemented in the past years.
  • On June 6, the Office of Representatives of the Party organized a session on education in Egypt as part of a series of discussion sessions entitled “From Mahalla al-Kubra to National Dialogue”. The aim of the session was listening to all groups with different visions of the three axes of the national dialogue, political, social and economic, to involve citizens and those with expertise and listen to their views on various issues.
  • On June 10, the Party mourned the great Egyptian activist George Isaak, the general coordinator of the Kifaya Movement and the leader of the Civil Democratic Movement.

Bread and Freedom Party (under establishment)

  • On June 2, the Party published, on its official Facebook page, a statement of solidarity with the Sudanese Communist Party after the attack on it by the Rapid Support Forces.
  • On June 4, the Party organized an online symposium via its official Facebook page. The symposium was to discuss the legal basis for the sponsorship system (substitute sponsoring families).
  • On June 11, Shaimaa Hamdi, representative of the Party, delivered her speech at the freedom of information session of the Human Rights and Public Freedoms Committee at the National Dialogue Sessions.

Arab Democratic Nasserist Party

  • The At the beginning of June, a statement was issued by the Party regarding the events of the Engineers Syndicate:

“The Arab Democratic Nasserist Party condemns the acts of bullying, rioting, and violence that took place in the headquarters of the Extraordinary General Assembly of the Egyptian Engineers Syndicate.”

  • On June 2, a symposium was organized on the crisis of the Palestinian factions entitled; “The Unity of the Palestinian Forces between Reality and the Future”.
  • On June 4, the Party issued a statement regarding the soldier, Mohamed Salah:

“The Arab Democratic Nasserist Party proudly followed the news of the heroic operation carried out by the heroic Egyptian soldier on the eastern border against the soldiers of the Zionist enemy.”

  • On June 9, the party organized a symposium on the Sudanese crisis entitled; “Sudan between the crisis and future scenarios”.
  • On June 15, the Party issued a statement regarding the removal of Gamal Abdel Nasser name from the Nasser Military Academy and facilities.
  • On June 17, the Party organized a symposium on the achievements of the late President Gamal Abdel Nasser” entitled “Jamal Abdel Nasser… Addressing the Dredging of National Consciousness”.

Al-Karama Party

The party’s activity was limited to an attempt to honor the martyr soldier Mohamed Salah of the Central Security Forces, who was martyred on June 3 during his military service.

Al-Wafd Party

The party did not hold any activities, except for a struggle between the party president, Abdel Sanad Yamama, and Fouad Badrawi, one of the party leaders.

Each of them claimed that he was entitled to run in the upcoming presidential elections in 2024.

National Progressive Unionist Party

  • On June 3, the Party issued a statement:

“The events of the Engineers Syndicate have negatively affected the public scene. Those involved and instigators must be exposed.”

  • On June 6, the Cairo Municipality met at the Party to discuss some files, including a proposal to hold elections by the proportional list.
  • On June 10, the Party called on the leaders of the civil movement to take a decisive position on the attempts to return the “Muslim Brotherhood” group to the political scene

Free Egyptians Party

  • On June 13, the Party presented its vision of the electoral systems and the preparation of parliaments.

 

Conservative Party

    • On June 8, the Party called for amending the laws related to tenders and auctions in the sessions of the National Dialogue.
  • On June 9, the party participated in the civil movement meeting with the participation of potential presidential candidate Ahmed Tantawi and the founder of Al-Karama Party, Hamdeen Sabahi.


Movement of the Revolutionary Socialists

  • On June 1st, the movement published on its official Facebook page a “report on a reading in the Turkish elections after the victory of the Justice and Development Party in the Turkish elections.”
  • On June 3, the movement published on its official Facebook page a report on Al-Nabrawi calling for announcing the results of the referendum. Sub-unions condemn bullying
  • On June 4, the movement published, on its official Facebook page, “a report on the appearance of Moaz al-Sharqawi the previous day in the Supreme State Security Prosecution after 24 days of enforced disappearance, in connection with a new case No. 540 of 2023 limiting State Security to accusations of joining and financing a terrorist group.”
  • On June 4, the movement published on its official Facebook page a report on the national dialogue on the population issue.
  • On June 6, the movement published on its official Facebook page a statement about the heroism of the living martyr, Mohamed Salah.
  • On June 8, the movement published on its official Facebook page a news report about “the people of the Mina Al-Arish neighborhood continuing to defend their land and not being displaced from it.”
  • On June 9, the movement published on its official Facebook page a report on the management of security and guard companies in Egypt
  • On June 11, the movement published on its official Facebook page a report about the difficulties faced by Sudanese entering Egyptian territory.
  • On June 12, the movement published on its official Facebook page a report about the strike of Kiriazi Electrical Appliances workers, and the administration threatening to terminate the striking workers.
  • On June 19, the movement published on its official Facebook page a news report on the news of “selling meat in installments” and its repercussions among Egyptian society.
  • On June 20, the movement published, on its official Facebook page, a news report on the collective termination of more than 50 workers in  “Kiriazi” company, to end the workers’ strike.

Section Two: Professional and labor unions in Egypt

 

Professional unions

  • Egyptian Medical Syndicate (EMS)

  • On May 25, a number of residents of Boulaq al-Dakrour stormed the emergency department and seriously injured the medical and nursing staff at Boulaq al-Dakrour Hospital.
  • On May 26, EMS decided that the quorum for holding the Ordinary General Assembly, scheduled for 300 doctors, would not be complete to discuss several issues related to the profession.
  • On June 3, EMS Elections Committee announced the opening of the door for candidacy for the mid-term elections for the syndicate head seat, the membership seats of the General Syndicate Council, the sub-head seat, and the membership seats of the subsidiary union councils, starting from Tuesday, June 20, provided that the door for candidacy closes on Friday. June 30, 2023.
  • On June 9, the House of Representatives discussed a proposal to put in place a law with controls and restrictions for doctors that would prohibit their resignation or emigration until after certain years, and a state of anger among doctors over that proposal had emerged.
  • On June 10, EMS held a general assembly in the presence of 450 doctors and decided to take several decisions approving the appointment of an auditor with an increase in his salary by 10%, approving budgets from 2013 to 2019 and other important decisions.
  • On June 20, the Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to renew Dr. Hani Suleiman detention for 15 days pending case No. 508 of 2023 State Security.
  • On June 21, the Public Prosecution renewed the detention of Dr. Ahmed El-Tabbakh, a professor at the Faculty of Dentistry at Misr University for Science and Technology, for a period of 15 days, pending investigations, on charges of joining a terrorist group, spreading false news and information, and inciting violence.

 

  • Egyptian Journalists Syndicate:

  • On May 26, Cairo Terrorism Criminal Court decided to renew the detention of journalist Karim Ibrahim for 45 days pending case No. 569 of 2020 State Security.
  • On May 28, and on the Arab Media Forum in Kuwait, the Syndicate Head met with a number of Egyptian journalists residing in Kuwait to discuss professional issues, the problems of colleagues and their proposals to solve them.
  • The Professional Development and Training Committee announced the availability of a training course for journalists on learning writing skills and managing websites and electronic platforms
  • On June 6, and on the centenary of the late journalist writer Mohamed Hassanein Heikal, a course was prepared on data journalism and evidence-based content and the use of artificial intelligence tools.
  • On June 10, the head of the Syndicate held a meeting with the Minister of Social Solidarity. This was to discuss ways to support journalists in the schedules and those who are not registered and not socially or insurance insured.
  • After the intervention of the head of the Syndicate, by communicating with the concerned authorities, the family of journalist Karim Ibrahim was able to visit him for the first time since he was imprisoned for 3 years pending case No. 569 of 2020 State Security.
  • On June 20, Cairo Terrorism Criminal Court, held in the Badr Prison Complex, considered the renewal of the detention of photojournalist Hamdi Al-Zaim pending Case No. 955 of 2020 Supreme State Security, and decided to continue his detention for 45 days.
  • On June 22, the websites of the Fourth Authority and Egypt 360 were blocked, and the Syndicate stated that they were blocked for not obtaining a license in accordance with Law 180 of 2018.

  • Egyptian lawyers Syndicate

  • On June 4, the Legal Thought Committee held 6 seminars in several different sub-unions, such as Alexandria, North Giza, Helwan, North Qalubia, and West Tanta. The seminars were on cybercrimes and forensic evidence in light of technological development, military justice, child law and criminal liability, file preparation and defense, cheque provisions and the role of the lawyer in the stock exchange.
  • On June 10, the Syndicate announced that the Syndicate head had assigned a defense team to appear on behalf of three lawyers to defend them on the charge of incitement to murder.
  • On June 20, Cairo Terrorism Criminal Court decided to renew the detention of the young lawyer, Youssef Mohamed Mansour, for 45 days pending case 330 of 2022 State Security, and renewing the detention of lawyer Ahmed Nazeer Al-Helou for 45 days pending case 1940 of 2022.
  • Egyptian Engineers Syndicate (EEA)

  • On June 30, the committee supervising the vote to withdraw confidence from the head of (EEA), Tariq Al-Nabrawi announced the failure of the call to withdraw confidence from (EEA), confirming the renewal of confidence in Al-Nabrawi by the majority of the votes of the attendees at the emergency general assembly of (EEA).
  • On May 31, after the end of the voting process of the Extraordinary General Assembly, in the presence of approximately 24,000 engineers to withdraw confidence from the head of (EEA) or the office and indicators, the decision was the remain of the head, after the intervention of a number of thugs and assaults on the voting committees and funds and some engineers
  • On June 1, Parliamentary Representative Maha Abdel Nasser decided that she would submit an official request to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, to transfer the four deputies of the Nation’s Future Party who appeared in the videos of the storming of (EEA) to the Ethics Committee.
  • On June 7, Eng. Tariq Al-Nabrawi, Head of (EEA), addressed the Administrative Prosecution to announce the result immediately in order to preserve the right and will of the engineers who attended the electoral process.
  • The Minister of Irrigation, the Minister of Transport, and the former head of the Engineering Authority of the Armed Forces, Kamel Al-Waziri, came to the headquarters of (EEA). That was to resolve the crisis between the competing parties within the council, and to announce the resignation of the old office staff during the press conference held at headquarters of (EEA) in the presence of the entire board and head.
  •   On June 17, (EEA) announced the formation of the new office, after the victory of the General Assembly will on May 30.

  • Acting Professions Syndicate

On June 3, the head of the Syndicate met with the Syndicate Council to discuss preparations for the actual operation of the Senior Artists Residence in the Sixth of October City.

  • Nursing Syndicate

On June 17, due to the refusal of the administration of Al-Hayat Hospital in Port Fouad to give Nurse Israa Ahmed a sick leave, after she was diagnosed with a stroke, which caused her death.

  • Pharmacists Syndicate

  • On June 8, the founder of Egypt Pharmacists Hope Union addressed the National Dialogue Department to present the issues and challenges facing the syndicate, the most important of which is the lifting of judicial receivership.
  • On June 12, the Administrative Court decided to postpone the case against the first deputy of the General Syndicate of Pharmacists and the Acting Head of the Syndicate to stop the implementation of the decision to refrain from calling for elections for the General Syndicate Council and its sub-sections until the next October 8 session.

  • Veterinarians Syndicate

  • On May 29, a parliamentarian submitted a briefing request to the Speaker of the House of Representatives addressed to the Ministers of Agriculture, Land Reclamation, and Livestock, as well as Higher Education, and Health, regarding the shortage in the number of veterinarians, which amounted to 15,000.
  • On June 5, the Head of the Syndicate announced a training course on infection control, starting from June 11 to June 15, for a fee.

  • Music Professions Syndicate

  • On May 30, the Syndicate gave a warning to artist, Ahmed Saad, after he appeared at a party while he was in Geddah, Saudi Arabia, because he was wearing transparent clothes.
  • On June 1, the Syndicate announced that legal measures would be taken against musician Mounir Al-Wasimi because of his statements against the Syndicate and its head calling them insulting, slandering, and defamation.
  • On June 3, the Syndicate referred the musician, Mounir Al-Wasimi, due to the violations contained in the reports of the Central Auditing Agency for the period from 2007 to 2010, when Al-Wasimi was serving as the head of the Syndicate.
  • On June 8, the head of the syndicate announced the details of the upcoming elections for the 2023/2027 session, next August.
  • Holy Quran Memorizers Association

  • On May 29, the Syndicate strongly criticized Sheikh Mamdouh Amer over him singing to Om Kolthoum and dancing during his sister’s wedding.
  • On June 14, the Syndicate decided to activate the planned increase for pensioners and widows by 100%, starting from July, so that the pensioner would receive L.E.900 rather than L.E. 500 every three months, while the widow would receive L.E. 800 rather than L.E. 500 every three months.

  • General Physical Therapy Syndicate (GPTS)

On June 16, during its participation in the national dialogue sessions, GPTS called for a request to propose amending some articles of the Law on Practice of Physiotherapy Profession to be in line with the current time and to increase criminal penalties for pretenders and intruders.

  • Media Syndicate

On June 9, the Syndicate announced the papers required to obtain a permit to practice the profession from non-members.

  • Labour Unions


  • The Egyptian Public Transport Authority Workers Union

  • On May 28, the Supreme State Security Prosecution considered renewing the detention of worker Muhammad Hashem pending case No. 148 of 2023 State Security, and decided to imprison him for another 15 days.
  • On June 18, Giza Workers Union of the Public Transport Authority, and agreed to form a conciliation committee to communicate with the departments of companies and institutions to discuss work problems and find immediate solutions to them.

  • The Union of Engineering, Metal, Electrical Workers

On June 12, for the second time, the workers of Kiriazi Company announced their strike after the first strike on June 7, on the grounds of unequal distribution of the company profits to workers for half a month of wages and to administrators for two and a half months.

On June 19, the company’s management announced the termination of dozens of the striking workers.

  • The General Trade Union of Hotels and Tourism

On June 15, the Safety, Health and Occupational Institute of the Workers Education Association, held courses for workers in more than 9 hotels in Sharm El-Sheikh.

  • Egyptian Trade Union Federation (ETU)

On June 20, the National Wages Council decided to raise the minimum wage from 2,700 to 3,000 pounds at the beginning of next July.

Section 3: Human Rights Organizations and Defenders

  • Human Rights Organizations most important activities and publications


  • National Council for Human Rights (NCHR):

  • On June 1, 2023, NCHR held, in cooperation with the European Union, a panel discussion entitled (Fair Criminal Trial) on guarantees for the implementation of a fair criminal trial.
  • On that same date, NCHR’s own Political Rights Committee held a workshop entitled “Freedom to allow circulation of information in terms of constitutional rights and challenges.”
  • On June 8, 2023, NCHR held the third training course on the basics of human rights, in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Solidarity.

  • Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) 

  • On June 1, 2023, AFTE published a statement condemning the Egyptian security services’ continued disappearance of the former vice president of Tanta University Students Union, Moaz Al-Sharqawi, for the 22nd day, and calling on authorities to immediately clarify his fate.
  • On the same date, AFTE published a statement regarding not receiving a response to its letter to the Public Prosecutor last March, in which it called for the release of the poet Galal Al-Beheiri, and warned against repeating the tragedy of the director of the song Balaha, Shadi Habash, who died in his prison in 2020.
  • On June 7, 2023, AFTE published a statement calling on the Public Prosecutor, to investigate the incident of its client, Ahmed Al-Tohamy, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economic Studies and Political Science at Alexandria University, who is on food and water strike because of his continued imprisonment, despite exceeding the maximum limit for pre-trial detention.
  • On June 12, 2023, AFTE published the speech of its lawyer, Mr. Ahmed Othman, in the national dialogue session to discuss the Freedom of Information Act, to which AFTE contributed to presenting an initial draft prepared by the AFTE ‘s team.

  • Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR)

  • On May 30, 2023, EIPR published a statement calling for the release of Nasserist party member Aida Mahmoud Othman, and calling on authorities to stop using pretrial detention as a punishment depriving liberty, rather than as a precautionary measure.
  • On June 1, 2023, EIPR published a statement condemning the storming of the General Assembly of the Engineers Syndicate and calling on the Public Prosecution and the House of Representatives to investigate and protect the right to organize.
  • On June 4, 2023, EIPR published a statement condemning the violations against former student union leader, Moaz Al-Sharqawi, during his disappearance, before appearing and interrogation in the Supreme State Security Prosecution.
  • On June 10, 2023, Amr Abdel Rahman, Director of the Civil Liberties Unit at EIPR, participated in a symposium organized by the Freedoms Committee of the Journalists Syndicate on “The Need to Issue a Freedom of Information Law… Between Constitutional Obligation and General Climate Data.”
  • On June 14, 2023, the Right to Health Program at EIPR organized a workshop that discussed the health system in Egypt, in which 8 Egyptian health care officials and experts participated, representing the government, civil society, the private sector, service providers, and policy makers.
  • On June 15, 2023, the director of the Right to Health Program at EIPR participated in the first session of the Health Committee in the community focus of the national dialogue, devoted to the topic “Health care between challenges and hopes; a comprehensive health insurance system.”
  • On June 17, 2023, Hossam Bahgat, Executive Director of EIPR, participated via video conference in the annual meeting of special rapporteurs, independent experts and working groups of the United Nations Human Rights Council, which was held at the headquarters of the UNHCR in Geneva.
  • On June 19, 2023, EIPR published on its Facebook page that Patrick George, a researcher at the Foundation, submitted a request to the Public Prosecutor to remove his name from the travel ban lists, so that he could travel to Italy during the period from 4 – 7 July, to discuss his Master’s thesis at the University of Bologna.
  • Regional Center for Rights and Liberties:

  • On June 11, 2023, the Center published a “video graph” on its Facebook page, entitled “What do journalists want from the national dialogue”, which included a number of journalists demands represented in amending legislation and releasing pre-trial detainees.

  • Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms (ECRF)

  • On June 11, 2023, ECRF launched a campaign entitled “Wings of Justice”, shedding lights on the professional relations of lawyers with the rest of the justice system, including judges and the public prosecution. The campaign also tackled how the balance of power between them affects lawyers performing their role, especially in the right to legal representation for individuals facing death penalty as one of the pivotal rights in the right to a fair trial.
  • On June 20, 2023, ECRF launched “Welcome Zole” to support Sudanese refugees who fled armed conflicts in Sudan and came to Egypt during the past months, in conjunction with World Refugee Day.

  • Manakh Initiative for Environmental Studies

  • On May 27, 2023, Manakh published a research paper entitled “The Impact of Climate Change on Egyptian Urbanism”.
  • On June 4, 2023, Manakh published its report; “Egypt, climate changes, and what happened during the past years”, in conjunction with the rise in temperatures and the various effects of climate change.
  • On the same date, Manakh published a report entitled “Undermining the Public Sphere and its Relationship to Restricting the Work of Environmental Organizations”. The report dealt with the restrictions and harassment by Egyptian security authorities on civil society institutions and the impact on their work related to the environment and climate change. It also reviewed censorship on social media and restriction of freedom of opinion, expression and circulation of information, as well as restricting the right to peaceful demonstration and assembly.
  • On June 18, Manakh published a position paper entitled “Information Transparency and Freedom of Information as a Mechanism for Confronting Climate Change”.

  • Egyptian Front for Human Rights (EFHR)

  • On June 20, 2023, EFHR published a statement condemning the expansion of the jurisdiction of the State Security Prosecution to include criminal cases of an economic nature and the imprisonment of persons on charges of terrorism.

  • Al-Haq Association for Freedom of Opinion, Expression and Human Rights:

  • On June 8, 2023, Al-Haq issued the 17th issue of its electronic newsletter, “Harf Haq”, which includes all cases, investigations, and decisions issued during the period from May 15 to May 31, 2023.
  • On June 14, 2023, Al-Haq organized a round table to discuss the amendment of a number of articles of Law No. 149 of 2019 issued regarding NGOs.

  • Technology and Law Community – Masaar:

  • On May 30, 2023, Masaar published a research paper entitled Legal Technology: Balance between Justice and Challenges.
  • On June 19, 2023, Masaar published a research paper entitled The Impact of Gender Policies for E-Marketing on Shaping Gender Expression on the Internet.

  • Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights (ECESR)

  • On May 30, 2023, ECESR filed an urgent lawsuit before the Administrative Court of the State Council, against the Prime Minister, the minister of antiquities and others in their capacity. The lawsuit is to demand a halt to the implementation of the negative decision to refrain from providing the necessary protection for tombs and archaeological buildings with distinguished architectural heritage in the historic Cairo cemeteries and to designate a sanctuary for these antiquities.
  • On June 5, 2023, ECESR issued a statement calling on the government to adopt stricter policies to reduce plastic and carbon emissions, and to stop encroaching on green spaces.
  • On June 12, 2023, ECESR issued a statement reiterating its demand for an urgent plan to protect the marine environment and stop poaching, following the incident of a shark appearing in Hurghada and attacking a tourist.
  • On June 15, 2023, ECESR issued a statement of solidarity with journalists and workers in the Cairo office of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), in their legitimate demands, in protest against the management neglect of resolving their poor financial conditions for more than a year.

  • Collective Human Rights Activities

  • On June 14, 2023, both AFTE and EIPR issued a joint statement regarding the torture and harassment of Ahmed Abdel Meguid Orabi. He is in pre-trial detention in case No. 2094 of 2022, and the incident happened while he was being transferred from Badr 1 prison to Badr 3 prison, according to what had reached his family. The statement also demanded an investigation and holding those responsible for the attack accountable.

  • On June 3, 2023, the Supreme State Security Prosecution interrogated the former student union leader Moaz Al-Sharqawi – after he appeared from an enforced disappearance that lasted more than 20 days – and accused him of joining a terrorist group and committing the crime of financing terrorism in Case No. 540 of 2023 Supreme State Security.

  • Detention renewal:

  • On June 14, 2023, the Supreme State Security Prosecution renewed the detention of the former student union leader Moaz Al-Sharqawi for 15 days, pending investigations in Case No. 540 of 2023, Supreme State Security, on charges of joining a terrorist group and committing the crime of financing terrorism.
  • On June 21, 2023, the State Security Prosecution renewed Al-Sharqawi’s detention for another 15 days.
  • On June 18, 2023, the First Chamber of Terrorism at Cairo Criminal Court at Badr City Correction and Rehabilitation Center, renewed the detention of the activist and former spokesperson for the April 6 Movement, Sherif El-Roubi, for 45 days in Case No. 1634 of 2022 Supreme State Security, on charges of joining a terrorist group and spreading false news.
  • On June 20, 2023, the First Chamber of Terrorism at Cairo Criminal Court at Badr City Reform and Rehabilitation Center, renewed the detention of human rights lawyer Youssef Mansour for a period of 45 days in Case No. 330 of 2022 Supreme State Security on charges of joining a terrorist group and spreading false news and statements.
  • On the same date, the First Chamber of Terrorism in Cairo Criminal Court at Badr City Correction and Rehabilitation Center, renewed the detention of activist Nermin Hussein for a period of 45 days in Case No. 26 of 2021 Supreme State Security on charges of joining a terrorist group and publishing false news and statements.

  • Trials:

  • On June 24, 2023, the Agga Misdemeanor Court adjourned the trial of activist Mohamed Adel, on charges of publishing false news and statements, for the verdict to be announced on September 2, 2023.
